What is vintage clothing?

We consider Vintage to be an item which is at least 20 years old, with a cut off date to the late 1980s.

Often, the items on our site have been previously worn or used, although we do have items which are brand new with original store tags attached, but which are still classed as vintage as they are over 20 years old.

The term ‘retro clothing’ often goes hand in hand with ‘vintage clothing’. They are both basically the same thing, though retro can also refer to the patterns and style of the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

Definition of vintage clothing:
Vintage clothing is a generic term for new or second hand garments originating from a previous era. The phrase is also used in connection with a retail outlet, e.g. “vintage clothing store.” It can also be used as an adjective: “This dress is vintage.”

Why buy vintage?

Here at Virtual Vintage Clothing, we support the idea of being green and expressing individuality by recycling past fashions in order to be worn and enjoyed again. You will often find that vintage clothing is of much better quality, craftsmanship and longevity than modern day clothing as it was made for years of use, quite often being passed on down through the family.

Also, the chance of seeing someone else wearing the same vintage item is very small, as many vintage pieces were custom or hand made using different fabrics and patterns, or produced in small quantities, not mass produced like today’s clothing.

By purchasing vintage clothing from us, you are reducing your carbon footprint by recycling old resources, not importing more, and are avoiding abusive labour practices in third world countries as most of our clothing and accessories state ‘Made in England’ on their labels. We always source from the UK and do not buy in bulk, importing from the US like a lot of sellers.

How old are your items?

All of our items are at least 20 years old. Most of our items are from the 1960s, 70s and 80s, although we also stock earlier pieces from the early 20th century onwards which we feel are too good to be missed.

In what condition are your vintage items?

We only buy stock which we would be happy to wear and use ourselves, so you can rest assured the item you will receive will be of high quality. To ensure you know what to expect where quality is concerned, we grade all of our stock from good to mint condition which you will find stated in the item description chart on that particular item’s page.

Do you wash your items?

Personally, we feel there’s nothing worse than receiving dirty or smelly vintage clothing that you are dying to wear or use straight away! Unlike most other vintage sellers, we carefully wash all clothing in non biological, eco friendly washing powder, and even hand wash delicate items before selling them. Some vintage smells can be stubborn and may require a further wash by yourself, but generally, the item will be free from dirt and stains.

For dry clean only items such as leather and faux fur, we air these only to keep prices as reasonable as possible and point out any stains present in the item description.  For this reason, there may be occasions when a musty, common vintage odour is present.

We polish shoes and sponge clean bags to the best of our ability, but due to these items being more difficult to clean, there may be stubborn stains and scuffs present. All of our homeware and jewellery is carefully washed and polished, using lots of elbow grease, allowing you to see them at their best!

Do you stock reworked or “vintage style” clothing & accessories?

Unlike a lot of other vintage clothing shops, we choose not to stock reworked or ‘vintage style’ clothing and accessories as we feel that by doing that, the item loses its charm, special detailing, cut and history and it can also be misleading to the buyer who is searching for authentic vintage pieces.

Furthermore, we do not shorten dresses and skirts, feeling it should be up to the buyer whether they wish to alter them to their desired length or not. Occasionally, clothing may have been altered by the previous owner, for example, a shortened hemline or a new zip.

Some of our vintage clothing has been custom made – designed and created – by the original owner, so you can be sure you are getting a definite one-off.

We never knowingly sell modern items passed off as vintage as we do extensive research of the labels, brand, material, zips and style of the garment before uploading it to our website, often conversing with the supplier and even the previous owner where possible, to prevent this from happening.

How do I know if the item will fit?

We go to great lengths measuring all of our items, with measurements being stated in inches. We state an estimated size which we believe the item will fit, as often vintage sizing is outdated and does not represent modern day sizing to which we are used to. For example, a vintage size UK 12 may now be classed as a UK 8. For this reason we state both the original label size where given and a modern day comparison.

However, it is up to you to measure yourself to ensure a perfect fit. If unsure, we advise you to compare our measurements to those of your own item of clothing of which you are happy with its fit.

NB. All of our clothing sizes are taken with the garment laid flat and must be doubled if measuring around yourself.

Click here to see our size guide of how we measure our clothes. You can also access the size guide on each item’s detail page.

Please note all sizes are UK measurements.

How do I buy?

Click on the item that you would like to buy to view its details, then click the pink button titled ‘add to shopping bag’. If the item has been sold, it will display ‘sorry, it’s been sold’ in its place. When you have finished choosing items, click on the shopping bag symbol in the top right hand side of the page which will then take you to checkout.

What currencies do you accept?

All items are stated in GBP – UK Pound Sterling (£). For international orders, your card provider will exchange your payment at the current rate.

Do I need a Paypal account to pay?

No. Even when checkout out with PayPal they allow you to use a debit/credit card without a PayPal account.

I want to return an item, do you refund/reimburse postage costs?

We do have a no quibble returns policy, however the return postage costs are down to you: We will only refund postage costs if there has been a mistake with your order on our part as we clearly measure and photograph all items and point out any faults in the item description. After all, a High Street shop would not refund your journey fare if the item did not fit or you changed your mind!

We cannot refund returns costs for items with small imperfections as minor flaws are to be expected with vintage items, nor do we refund returns costs for items which do not fit, as clothing sizes are clearly given in the item description.

We do not refund postage costs for colour difference: We try to show and describe the exact colour for each item, but please be aware that colours may vary due to different monitor settings as well as different models of computers.

Do you have more than one of each item?

No, all items are one-offs so once it’s been sold, it’s gone forever!

An item I wanted has been sold – will you be getting more in?

As all of our products are authentic vintage one-offs we are unable to buy multiples of one item. Once an item has been sold it is gone forever (unless the item is returned within the returns period).
New stock is always being added so keep checking back for similar items to the one you missed out on.

How can I search for an item?

If you are looking for something specific, for example, ‘pink dress’, use the search box in the top right hand corner of the page by entering your chosen keyword, then press enter. Alternatively, you can also filter by subcategory, size and era on the left hand side when viewing a main category.

Why do you show items that have been sold?

If you are returning to view an item that you have seen, it may have been sold in the meantime. We show the products as sold for a few weeks afterwards so you know if it has been sold and it’s not that you just can’t find it on the site.

Do you have sales?

Yes, we occasionally have sales to make way for new stock, although unlike other retail or high street stores, we do stock clothing suitable for all seasons all year round.

I’m after a particular item, are you able to source it for me?

Please contact us via our contact page giving details and sizing if applicable on what you are looking for and we will try our best to source it for you.
