It’s time for this season’s 60s mod revival to take a back seat as this winter the 1970s is having its time in the spotlight, all thanks to director David O’ Russell’s critically acclaimed movie, American Hustle.
Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Christian Bale and Amy Adams, and set in New York and New Jersey in 1978, the film tells the story of a pair of con artists who are made to work for an FBI agent, played by Bradley Cooper.
Costume designer Michael Wilkinson transformed these stars, most notably Adams and Lawrence, into true 70s disco era throwbacks with big hair, slinky outfits and full on glamour with sequins and fur.
“We watched every film set in New York and New Jersey in 1978, looked at endless photographs of ‘real’ people from the period, magazine shoots, advertising and high fashion. We scoured private collections, vintage stores, flea markets and the film studios’ own rental houses. I mixed high end vintage designer pieces – Halston, Gucci, Diane von Furstenberg, Christian Dior and Ossie Clark – and custom made costumes, combining strong dramatic lines with soft, sensual fabrics.” designer Michael Wilkinson explained.
